"Just the pleasure of using your body is, I think, maybe the main point. And the pleasure of dancing with somebody in an unplanned and spontaneous way..."

Steve Paxton

Contact improvisation is an open, improvised dance involving 2 or more bodies, with physical contact as the main mode of communication. The dance includes rolling, falling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact and giving weight to a partner. Dance partners often move in and out of physical contact, flow together, and improvise while mutually supporting and following each other's movements. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative. It is a form of dance accessible to all bodies and inquiring minds.

BIO

I am a Colombian–Lithuanian choreographer, dancer, and teacher, and the Director of ConCuerpos, an inclusive dance company with a dual presence in Colombia and the Netherlands. My work brings together dancers with and without disabilities through artistic creation, education, and research. I originally trained in Psychology and Multimedia Creation in Colombia, and later completed a Master's in Choreography and the Embodied Life Art Program in the Netherlands. I have been in love with dance, contact improvisation, partnering, release, circus, and yoga for over twenty years, and continue to deepen this long-standing relationship with movement.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this workshop, I’ll invite you to cultivate your bodily intelligence through guided improvisations and specific movement tools. From a place of playfulness and abundant imagination, we will explore diverse relationships with ourselves and others through contact. In the first part, we will practice listening with our hands and skin. In the second part, we will connect and exchange weight through lifts and duo flows. This workshop is part of my ongoing investigation on developing images to melt the mind and awaken the instinct of the multiform body. Come prepare for serious work, dedicated study, and to always play!

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an artist interested in expanding what dance can be by breaking down barriers of participation and involving different languages. I believe in the strength of the collective and I understand art as a tool to generate positive change in society.

I love dancing on the ground and moving through spirals—up and down, in and out. I love to connect and inspire connections so we can enjoy dancing together.

I believe movement is our first language, and that there are many organic pathways to explore it. I also believe we can refine our way of thinking through movement by dancing.

For these reasons, I seek to create joyful and accessible spaces for movement research.
